Designing Dementia-Friendly Outdoor Environments
From 2000 to 2003 Elizabeth Burton and Lynne Mitchell, OISD:WISE were funded by EPSRC to
conduct a research project on designing the outdoor environment, to improve the quality of
life of older people with dementia. From this research they developed the concept of Neighbourhoods
for Life - neighbourhoods that people with dementia find easy to access, find their way around,
use and enjoy, enabling them to continue to live at home.
